topSteve Wozniak, Co-Founder, Apple Computers Inc.


A Silicon Valley icon and philanthropist for the past three decades, Steve Wozniak helped shape the computing industry with his design of Apple’s first line of products the Apple I and II and influenced the popular Macintosh. In 1976, Steve co-founded Apple Computer with the Apple I computer. The next year, he introduced his Apple II personal computer, featuring a central processing unit, a keyboard, colour graphics and a floppy disk drive, and helped to launch the PC industry.


For his achievements at Apple Computer, Steve was awarded the National Medal of Technology by the President of the United States in 1985, the highest honour bestowed on America’s leading innovators. In 2000, Steve was inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame and was awarded the prestigious Heinz Award for Technology, The Economy and Employment for “single-handedly designing the first personal computer and for then redirecting his lifelong passion for mathematics and electronics toward lighting the fires of excitement for education in grade school students and their teachers.”


After leaving Apple in 1985, Steve has been involved in various business and philanthropic ventures, focusing primarily on computer capabilities in schools and stressing hands-on learning and encouraging creativity for students. Making significant investments of both his time and resources in education, Steve “adopted” the Los Gatos School District, providing students and teachers with hands-on teaching and donations of state-of-the-art technology equipment. Wozniak founded the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and was the founding sponsor of the Tech Museum, Silicon Valley Ballet and Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose.


topDr Hugh Bradlow, Chief Technology Officer, Telstra Corporation


Hugh Bradlow is Chief Technology Officer for Telstra Corporation Limited and leads a group responsible for investigating the future technologies that will impact Telstra's business.


Prior to joining Telstra in September 1995, Hugh was Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Wollongong from 1987 to 1995. During his time at the University of Wollongong, he directed the Centre for Information Technology Research (CITR) and was Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He also took leave of absence from his University duties for four years to be Foundation Director of the NorTel Technology Centre; a R&D facility established on the campus of the University of Wollongong, by Nortel Networks.


Before coming to Australia in 1987, Hugh was Professor of Electrical Engineering (Digital Systems) at the University of Cape Town and a Control Systems Engineer at ICI Plastics Division in the United Kingdom.

topSenator Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy and Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate


Stephen Conroy was appointed as a Senator for Victoria in the upper house of the Australian Parliament in 1996. Stephen is a member of the Australian Labor Party. With the election of the Rudd Labor Government in 2007, Stephen was sworn in as the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy on 3 December 2007. He is a member of the Rudd Cabinet. He is also the Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate. In opposition he was the Deputy Opposition Leader in the Senate and Shadow Minister for Communications and Information Technology. Previously Stephen was an industrial officer and superannuation officer for the Transport Workers Union Victorian Branch from 1992 to 1996.


He was a ministerial adviser to the State Minister for Industry from 1990 to 1992 and an assistant adviser to the Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1988 to 1990. From 1986 to 1987, Stephen was an electorate officer for the Federal Member for Canberra, consultant to the Minister for Science and Minister assisting the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce and electorate officer for the Minister for Home Affairs. He worked for the Metal Trades Industry Association from 1984 to 1986.

Nigel Dews became Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison (3) in January 2007 after previously being responsible for sales, marketing and product development for 3 years. This included responsibility for the development of mobile content and 3G services. Prior to joining Hutchison, Nigel held senior management positions at Fairfax Media for over 7 years, largely in the digital business, and before that was a senior consultant at McKinsey & Company, following time as an economist at the Reserve Bank of Australia.



topDidier Dillard, Head of domestic wholesale division, France Telecom


Didier Dillard graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique (Paris, 1984), MS in Engineering from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications (Paris, 1986), MBA from Columbia University (New York 1997).


Dillard started his career at France Telecom submarine cable division, where he held various positions: project manager for new systems engineering, installation project manager onboard FT cable ships, and finally Director of Marine Operations.


He then joined France Telecom North America in New York as Vice President, Business Development in 1994. During that period, he was involved in the preparation of Global One venture working with Sprint and DT. He managed US market observation teams providing consulting services to most of FT marketing and strategy departments.


In 1997, he joined Sprint Wholesale Services Group in Kansas City as Assistant Vice President, International, responsible for market strategy, product definition and sales support for all international services offered by Sprint to US carriers and resellers.


He came back to FT in Paris in 1999, working in the Marketing Division of the Branche Entreprises (Business Division) as Vice President in charge of the business unit for CRM solutions.


In 2004, he was appointed to his current position Head of domestic wholesale division of France Telecom, being responsible for sales and services activities towards all carriers operating in France and managing the associated P&L.

Grant Forsyth currently works for British Telecom Global Services, as Head of Global Interconnection, based in London with a focus on Europe. Prior to moving to London in 2006 Grant was Manager of Industry & Regulatory Affairs for TelstraClear in New Zealand for seven years and prior to that he held the role of CEO of TUANZ (the Telecommunications Users Association of New Zealand) following a career in IT in NZ, UK and USA.


Grant was a BC representative on the GNSO Council 2000-2006 and an Internet New Zealand Council rep 2002 – 2006 (INZ is the delegated manager of the .nz domain).

Gary Hayes has led the Laboratory for Advanced Media Production at AFTRS since 2005 which has helped develop 54 Australian emerging media projects and run hundreds of workshops and industry seminars. As Head of Virtual Worlds at the Project Factory he has personally produced, designed and built Second Life presences for Australian brands, including BigPond, ABC TV, Tourism and MultiMedia Victoria, Physical TV, AFTRS and Deakin University. He is currently developing ‘experience’ worlds for major US based fortune 100 companies


Before coming to Australia Gary was Senior Producer at BBC Broadcast and New Media for 8 years, devising and producing many of the BBC’s digital interactive “firsts” - the first 24/7 Interactive TV service, the first global, live internet documentary and the first interactive programme on Broadband TV. He also devised and/or created over 20 other enhanced TV shows including Top of the Pops, Walking with Dinosaurs, Travel Show, several future BBC cross-platform navigators and was part of BBC Imagineering developing early “inhabited TV”, Virtual World and TV Mixed Reality formats.


He was a driving force behind New Media training and strategy and became BBC Senior Development Manager in New Media and simultaneously chaired the Business Models Group for TV-Anytime. He moved to the US in 2004 to develop on-demand formats with broadcasters such as NBC and CBS and also line produced the Showtime’s enhanced L-Word, PVR service as part of the AFI eTV labs. He has been an International Interactive Emmy Awards juror for the past three years.

topShirley Lue Arnold, Non-Executive Chairman, Telkom SA


Shirley Lue Arnold was appointed to the Board on November 1, 2006 as Chairperson and Non-Executive Director. Shirley has served as a Non-Executive Director and Chairperson of the Empowerment Committee of Peermont Global Ltd since July 2004. Shirley is a member of the Chairpersons Forum, Gordon Institute of Business and also a member of the Independent Directors Initiative and the Institute of Directors in South Africa. She is a trustee of the Thutuka Bursary Fund (SAICA) and the Maths Centre, and is also a patron of the Student Sponsorship Programme. Shirley was a Non-Executive Director of Ernst and Young South Africa from February 2002 to April 2006 and Acting Chairperson from February 2005 to April 2006. She was also a member of the accounting firm's nominations committee from November 2004 to April 2006.

Dr Karl Mallon is director of Science and Systems at Climate Risk Pty Ltd. He is a first class honours graduate in physics from the United Kingdom and holds a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Melbourne. He has been the recipient of research scholarships from the British Council and European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN). Karl has worked in the field of climate change and energy since 1991 and is the editor and co-author of 'Renewable Energy Policy and Politics: A Handbook for Decision Making' published by Earthscan (London). He has worked as a technology and energy policy analyst for various international government and non-government organisations. Karl was a member of the CSIRO's Energy Futures Forum which reported in 2006, as well as a director of the Australian Wind Energy Association between 2003 and 2005.

Hilary Mine has recently been appointed head of Alcatel Lucent’s newly created Australasia and North Asia (ANA) Division. The creation of ANA is part of a global announcement that separates Alcatel-Lucent into eight regional units across two international divisions - the Americas and rest of the world. Hilary retains responsibility for Australia and New Zealand, and now adds South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau and the Pacific Islands to her portfolio.


Hilary, a US citizen, became the first non-engineer and the first woman to head the Australian company when she was appointed in October 2005. Before that she was the senior vice president, Alcatel North America marketing and channels. She also had responsibility for all market analysis, intelligence and strategy activities for the region.


She joined Alcatel from the industry analyst firm Probe Research where she was executive vice president, with responsibility for providing tactical and strategic guidance to global technology companies and service providers in areas including market timing, product marketing, competitive analysis, and strategic customer focus. Hilary has also held senior analyst and management positions with Intel and the Gartner Group.

Dennis joined Pacific Internet (PI) in 1999 and is a co-founder of the Australian operations. He brings to the company 15 years of leadership and management experience in the Internet Services Providers and Information Technology industries.

Prior to PI, Dennis held various management positions including Executive Manager Finance at MITS Limited, Manager Group Finance (Commodity Trading Division) with Elders Resources NZFP Limited, and Management Consultant with SIP Pty Limited.

Dennis is also a Director of the Communications Alliance, Australia’s peak communications industry forum. He holds a Masters of Applied Finance from University of Melbourne and is a Certified Practicing Accountant.


topDeirdre O’Donnell, Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman


Deirdre O’Donnell took up the position of Ombudsman of the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman Scheme at the end of May 2007.


Prior to that, she was the State Ombudsman for Western Australia for five years from February 2002 to February 2007; where the Ombudsman’s role was to receive and investigate complaints about government administrative practices.


Deirdre was also a State Records Commissioner and the Energy Ombudsman for WA. In recognition of her work in Western Australia, she received a Public Service Medal in the Australia Day honours for 2008.


From 1990 to 2002, Deirdre was involved in the telecommunications industry. She was Deputy Ombudsman at the TIO between 1999 and 2002, and held senior regulatory positions at Optus and the industry regulator, the Australian Communications Authority (now ACMA), as well as working for the former Telecom.

Judith O'Neill has practiced law in the United States and internationally for 29 years, spending most of her time in the developing world, from the Caribbean, Latin America to Africa and the Middle East. She works on telecommunications mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, transactions, and services and equipment contracts, interconnection, and call termination agreements globally.


Judith lectures all over the world on the legal, regulatory, and business aspects of the telecommunications sector, including putting telecommunications companies and projects together with financing. Most recently, she has been involved in the growth of Voice over Internet Protocol and its role in the telecommunications sector in the U.S. and around the world, as well as the expanding trials with Power Line Communications (PLC) as a last mile solution.

Annikki Schaeferdiek became head of Marketing and Strategy at the newest business unit at Ericsson, Business Unit Multimedia, in October 2007. Prior to joining Ericsson, she was CEO of Netwise, an IP and enterprise application company with 140 employees that was acquired and integrated into Ericsson.


Since joining Ericsson, Annikki has been responsible for developing and implementing the multimedia strategy and for developing marketing messages to help bring the new business models and new products to consumers. Annikki has 8 years experience in the telecommunication industry and prior to Netwise she worked at a number of small technology companies.


topMark Scott, Managing Director, Australian Broadcasting Corporation


Mark Scott took up his appointment as Managing Director of the ABC in July 2006.


For the previous 12 years he worked at John Fairfax Publications. First appointed as Education Editor at The Sydney Morning Herald, he filled a number of senior roles at the Herald including Saturday Editor and Deputy Editor before moving into senior executive positions with Fairfax. He was Director of Organisation Development and then appointed Editor-in-Chief of Metropolitan Newspapers. Immediately prior to moving to the ABC he was Fairfax's Editorial Director.
